What we know
From the teased images, it’s clear that the Nord 2 has a familiar design and a triple camera on the back. A few confirmed details show that, as with Nord in the past, we can expect a 6.43-inch 90 Hz AMOLED liquid display with HDR support.
50 megapixel camera
The rear cameras will receive a major upgrade in the form of a 50-megapixel primary camera based on Sony’s IMX 766 sensor. This camera has larger pixels – which should turn slightly improved in low light and image quality – and has OIS. The specifications for the two remaining cameras have not yet been confirmed, but it is safe to assume that we will get a very wide and macro.
MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI chip
More interesting is the chipset that uses this phone. Unlike last year’s Snapdragon 765, the Nord 2 gets a major upgrade in the form of the MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI SoC, which OnePlus worked with MediaTek to improve.
The core circuit has an 8-core processor – ARM Cortex-A78 Ultra Core, 3x ARM Cortex-A78 core cores and 4x ARM Cortex-A55 power cores – paired with the Mali-G77 MC9 graphics card. The chipset supports dual-SIM 5G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, four-channel memory and dual-channel UFS 3.1 storage.
The chipset is capable of handling 4K-stacked HDR video recording, so it’s safe to assume that the OnePlus Nord 2 5G will also work.
OnePlus has not confirmed Nord 2 5G RAM and storage, but we can expect the new phone to be at least equivalent to the previous phone’s 12GB of RAM and 256GB of UFS 2.1 memory options.
When it stands, OnePlus claims that the new chip offers 65% faster processor and 125% faster GPU performance compared to the previous Nord.
In partnership with MediaTek, OnePlus has taken the standard Dimensity 1200 feature and added new artificial intelligence features. First, these hardware-accelerated artificial intelligence features address image processing, stabilization, and night mode. AI Color Boost and Resolution Scaling are also present and are designed to enhance the ‘display experience’. Assume that this refers to the quality of the images displayed on the screen.
Lastly, battery life. Again, there are no official details on this front, but we should expect Nord 2 to be at least equivalent to the previous Nord and offer something bigger than 4000 mAh and support 30W fast charging.
