Amazon’s Fire tablet lineup gets new labels quite often, and of its three lines: Fire 7, Fire HD 8, and Fire HD 10, the latest upgrade model is the latter.
The new Amazon Fire HD 10 for 2021 is an upgrade to the company’s largest tablet, and comes alongside two siblings: the Fire HD 10 Plus and the Fire HD 10 Kids Edition – the former of the two being a brand new device.
In our inspection Amazon Fire HD 10 (2019) we thanked it for its long-lasting battery, practical design, and clear display – even though we haven’t gotten our hands on the new model or its siblings yet, we can bring you everything we know about records so far.
Go for it
- What is it? Amazon’s latest budget tablets
- When is it outside? We don’t know yet
- How much does it cost? Between $ 150 and $ 220
Amazon Fire HD 10 release date and price
While we know the price of Amazon Fire HD 10, the big question mark right now is the release date and regional availability.
The new tablet series was launched on April 27, and the lists will be released in Amazon USA, but the tablets are listed as “out of stock.” There are also no tablets in Amazon in other countries, so we don’t know when they will go on sale or where.
In terms of price, we have the price of each tablet in U.S. dollars, and we can use conversions to guess the exact release prices, even if these are rough guesses, until the actual cost is reported. You can see the prices of the three tablets below as well as the different size options they come in:
|Conversion of the United Kingdom
|Amazon Fire HD 10 (32GB)
|Amazon Fire HD 10 (64GB)
|Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus (32GB)
|Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus (64GB)
|Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Edition
These prices are mostly the same as the previous generation Fire HD 10 models that have been released, although they have been slightly cheaper over time. You can see current prices in your area below:
Design and presentation
The Amazon Fire HD 10 series is named after a screen that is 10.1 inches transversely in HD resolution – exactly as the name suggests.
In terms of design, you get the same utilitarian look as the previous entries in the line, albeit with slightly thinner frames.
The long frame features a forward-facing camera, USB-C port, 3.5mm headphone jack, and durable plastic body in black, blue, pink, or green.
The Kids Edition tablet is also covered in a large, colorful, child-resistant case that should protect it from the worst a child can throw at (or throw at) it.
Cameras and battery life
Amazon Fire HD 10 tablets have a 2-megapixel front camera, which is useful for video calling, and a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera for taking other people and other pictures.
Depending on the battery life, the discs are expected to last 12 hours of display time – but this may change depending on what you do. If you play a lot of games, you may not be able to get through 12 hours before you need payment, but if you only read books, you will probably be able to do it for longer.
Amazon predicts that the tablet will take four hours to charge, and this will use its USB-C port. Well, this is the case with the HD 10 and Kids Edition, but the HD 10 Plus also has wireless charging.
This uses the Qi wireless power standard, so it works extensively with docks, but is designed to work with Anker specifically made for the device. When you turn on the HD 10 Plus in this way, the tablet becomes an Alexa-compliant smart assistant.
Performance and software
Amazon doesn’t mean the chipsets used in its tablets, but we know of RAM, which can give us basic information about disk power.
While the 2019 model had 2GB of RAM, the Amazon Fire HD 10 in 2021 will have 3GB, a small but hopefully significant increase. This is also the case in the Kids Edition, but the Plus model extends up to 4GB, which is even more useful in games.
All Amazon tablets feature the company’s Android fork, built around the company’s application ecosystem, including the Kindle, Prime Music and Prime Video. There is an app store with a limited number of games and apps, but this kind of tablet is best used if you use the services of a company.
However, some competing apps, such as Netflix and Spotify, are available on the tablet fairly to the company.
There’s a range of apps available for the Kids Edition tablet that Amazon has chosen to be suitable for kids ages 3 to 7 – this prevents them from watching anything or playing games that aren’t right for them.
With Fire HD 10 Plus, you can use a display mode that essentially turns your tablet into an Amazon Echo show. This allows you to use a virtual assistant Alexa with lots of hands-free functionality. You can also buy a keyboard case for your tablet that is suitable for word processing and replying to emails.
So the new Amazon Fire HD 10 is pretty much the same as its predecessor from 2019, but with more RAM, a bigger battery, a USB-C port and smaller frames.
The Kids Edition is the same, but has child-friendly locks and a large protective case.
The HD 10 Plus has even more RAM, wireless charging and the ability to use display mode and connect to a keyboard case.
