AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su confirmed her virtual speech at Computex 2021, in addition to news of upcoming products, as well as two rumors that have been circulating for some time about the Samsung-Tesla partnership. AMD’s RDNA 2 graphics architecture will be used in Samsung’s next flagship, the Exynos SoC, and its Ryzen APUs and Radeon GPUs will use the Infotainment systems of future Tesla Model S and Model X versions. No details were provided on either partnership, as these companies will soon make their own product announcements.
Samsung and AMD announced a partnership in June 2019, when Korean giant AMD’s Radeon graphics IP address for Samsung’s upcoming Exynos processors. Just a few months later, Samsung said the first Exynos SoC Radeon graphics could have was released immediately in 2021, and it seems that the partnership is more or less sought after.
On stage in a virtual Computex 2021 Keynote, Su announced that Samsung’s next flagship Exynos smartphone processor will feature a custom Radeon RDNA 2-based graphics IP and will support beam tracking as well as variable speed shading. Samsung will talk more about the processor later this year. For flagship phones, Samsung often uses a mix of its own Exynos SoC services and other options such as Qualcommin Snapdragon chips for the same model around the world, so it’s interesting to see which models get high-end integrated graphics features.
It is also possible that the future Exynos SoC will be used for products other than smartphones. While the tablets would be obvious in other markets, it is rumored that Samsung plans to launch laptops with Windows on Arm. This could put it in competition with Apple, which has begun the transition to internal Arm-based processors with their own graphics IP.
Companionship Tesla has also been rumored since the American electric car manufacturer announced it revised model S and model X earlier this year, teasing enough graphics horsepower to play high-end in the car. The embedded Ryzen APU controls the Infotainment system on the dashboard of new luxury Tesla cars, and a separate standalone RDNA 2-based GPU allows users to run AAA games.
Both models feature large dashboard touch screens as well as rear passenger screens, and Tesla has announced that compatibility with wireless controllers allows you to play from any seat. Mockup image shows The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s cover photo has tweeted while Cyberpunk 2077 can also run on the system. It is not yet clear which game developers will support this new platform, or even what software the platform will use.
Su pointed out during his key meeting that the GPU is capable of delivering up to 10 teraflops of graphics power, which is roughly similar to PlayStation 5, but did not disclose any specifications. AMD already has a solid partner ecosystem that uses its graphics IP address, especially both Sony and Microsoft For past and present generations of PlayStation and Xbox game consoles.
