Apple is update for Mac Pro with new graphics modules on Tuesday with options based on the AMD Radeon Pro W6000 series. The company claims that the new Radeon Pro W6800X MPX module, Radeon Pro W6800X Duo MPX module and Radeon Pro W6900X MPX module should improve performance tasks that require graphics Apple designed the Pro. Continuing Pro support by bringing new GPU options to Apple’s custom Mac Pro Expansion Module System (MPX) is a pretty good sign that the company is still committed to its new, modular design.
AMD unveiled new graphics cards for the first time in June this year, with the promise that the W6800 will deliver “up to 79 percent faster performance than the previous generation”. Now, just over two months later, Apple claims in some cases that MPX-format graphics processors can achieve “up to 84 percent faster performance with the Octane X” and “up to 23 percent faster performance with the DaVinci Resolution.”
Prices for GPUs vary depending on the Apple store listings shared below, and each adds four other Thunderbolt 3 ports and an HDMI 2.0 port version, regardless of:
- Radeon Pro W6800X MPX module: plus $ 2,400 with 32GB of GDDR6 memory offering up to 512GB / s of memory bandwidth …[and] up to 16.0 teraflops for single accuracy or 32.0 teraflops for semi-accurate calculations. “
- Radeon Pro W6800X Duo MPX Module: plus $ 4,600 for two linked graphics processors, “each with 32GB of GDDR6 memory and up to 512GB of memory bandwidth … [and] up to 30.2 teraflops for single precision or 60.4 teraflops for semi-precision computing ”when two modules are installed together.
- Radeon Pro W6900X MPX module: plus $ 5,600 “with 32GB of GDDR6 memory offering up to 512GB / s of memory bandwidth … [and] up to 22.2 teraflops single precision or 44.4 teraflops semi-precision. ”
Apple says the new GPU modules will replace the previous AMD Radeon Pro Vega II MPX modules in customizable settings on the Apple website and in separate kits. As part of this new module launch, Apple is also giving up specifically the AMD Radeon Pro Vega II Duo MPX module and the AMD Radeon Pro Vega II MPX module, but still offers both as separate packages to existing customers.
