The first film made such a splash that Aquaman 2 soon became inevitable.
This is because of the most produced film ever Based on the DC Comics character, it doesn’t belong to any of the famous trinities of Batman, Superman, or Wonder Woman. Instead, Aquaman, directed by James Wan, starring Jason Momoa, defeated them all – the new King of Atlantis was also crowned King of the DC box office.
It’s some change for a sailor character who had traditionally been behind the joke in comic book circles – all about Family Guy’s fake James Cameron movie in Entourage. But thanks to Momo’s wisely cracking performance, DC’s New 52 reboot-inspired transformation, and The Conjuring / Fast & Furious 7 director James Wan’s instinct for underwater spectacle, he’s now one of DC Extended Universe’s MVPs – this is one franchise that hasn’t will not sleep with the fish soon.
So when the expected sequel is ready for production in the summer of 2021, we’ll dive into the intelligence already embedded on the beach – everything from the release date of Aquaman 2 and the actor to what it all means for the story. However, it turns out, Aquaman 2 is sure to get waves…
Release date of Aquaman 2: December 2022
The first Aquaman hit movie theaters in December 2018, and rose to the top within a month, which also included Mary Poppins Returns, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and Bumblebee. So it’s no big surprise that Warner Bros. has dedicated its second December debut sequel to the release date of Aquaman 2 on December 16, 2022 – almost four years after the release of the first film.
It looks like Aquaman 2 production will launch in the UK later this year – told Dolph Lundgren (a King of Nereus) to the Wizard World Virtual Experience (via ScreenRant) in any case. “I can make Aquaman 2 this summer by shooting in London,” the star of Rocky IV, He-Man and Punisher told his gathered fans.
The first film to be shot on Australia’s Gold Coast, so the UK is going to be a major relocation – while all the underwater scenes were shot in a studio studio where Actors are supported by a sophisticated harness, it shouldn’t make much of a difference in the film’s look.
Unlike Warner Bros.’s 2021 releases, it looks like Aquaman 2 won’t be released on the streaming service HBO Max at the same time, it hits theaters. By Deadline, Warner has teamed up with film distributors to start their 2022 release chart exclusively on the big screen – even if the theater’s exclusive window is cut to just 45 days, so you don’t have to wait that long to watch the film at home on your TV.
Go for it

- Where can I see it? Aquaman 2 debuted in theaters and navigated its way to home entertainment soon after.
- When can I watch it? Aquaman 2 is scheduled to be released in the theater on December 16, 2022. It will likely be available for home viewing about 45 days later.
Aquaman 2 Trailer: When Will We See It?
Since production is still in progress, it is a little early for DC and Warner to reveal all of the film footage. The first Aquaman tiger made its debut in the San Diego Comic-Con 2018 and – assuming a smaller Comic-Con special edition continues as planned for Thanksgiving weekend – it’s possible that we’ll see some sort of Aquaman 2 trailer there, especially as Warner / DC has a history of the great Hall H.
Nonetheless, DC has just announced that its digital FanDome event will return in 2021 on October 16th. Last year, the Batman trailer was unveiled for the first time – so it’s more likely to see Aquama there this year, as the event is specifically aimed at a global audience.
Aquaman 2 Actors: who is in the movie
Here are the confirmed members of Aquaman 2 based on what we know so far, although you can expect this list to grow as we learn more about the film:
- Jason Momoa Arthur Curryna / Aquamanina
- Amber Heard as the character Mera
- Patrick Wilson Ormina
- Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as a black mantana
- Pilou Asbæk as an unannounced figure
It is no surprise that Jason Momo will return to play Arthur Curry / Aquaman for the fourth time (Aquaman, Justice League and very short thumbnail in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice). And despite (seemingly unfounded) rumors that Amber Heard will not return to Princess Xebelia (and the daughter of Nereus) Merana, the actress sent a picture of herself reading the book Instagram feed – in conjunction with the # gettingakindleforaquaman2 hashtag.
James Wan’s permanent Patrick Wilson has seemingly confirmed that he is part of the actor in the film Aquaman 2 when Arthur Curry has shown his mercy to his intriguing nephew Orm (aka the self-made Ocean Master). Instagram a message about his training routine.
And it looks like there’s someone on hand to keep the wrinkling siblings in check, following Nicole Kidman’s rumor (via We got this covered up) return to their mother, Atlanta Queen Atlanta. Although it has not yet been officially confirmed, we suspect that this will also mean a return to Temuera Morrison (soon to be seen Book by Boba Fett) As Arthur ‘s father, Thomas Curry – after all, after the reunification of Atlanta and Thomas, decades apart, it would be cruel not to let them ignite a new romance that brought the two worlds together.
There’s no word yet on whether Willem Dafoe will return as Arthur’s Atlantic mentor to Vulco, but that seems to be a sure bet if only to help keep the new king of Atlantis straight and narrow.
Meanwhile, Watchmen star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II confirmed Uproxx that he returns to represent the surface inhabitants of one of the most iconic helmets in comic books, the owner of the revenge-obsessive black Manta. We’ll probably see more of Randall Park as well (recently seen starring Jimmy Woo in Marvel’s) WandaVision) from a marine biologist to Atlantis expert Dr. Stephen Shin, seeing that the two joined forces during Aquaman’s finale.
And given Pilou Asbæk’s history as the Devil in the Game of Thrones, we probably believe his role in the Aquaman 2 movies Deadline) is skewed more on the dark side than on the light.
Aquaman 2 Plot: What Can Atlantis Book?
Now that DC is hanging less than it was meant to create a woven, MCU-style split universe for its superheroes, what we know for sure about Aquaman 2 is that the film was written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. The author previously worked with director James Wan on two films The Conjuring and the first Aquaman.
“I think the other one is a little more serious, a little more meaningful in the world we live in today,” Wan teased at DC’s Virtual FanDome in August 2020 (via Deadline). “I think it wants to go.”
He expanded a bit when Patrick Wilson suggested he would rather see Aquaman 2 by exploring unknown waters. “I can definitely guarantee you new worlds in this next one,” replied Wan, “and I think you’re excited about the actor.”
What does all this mean for Arthur Curry now that he has dressed Aquaman’s classic gold and green armor, got his hands on the Atlantic Trident, and taken his place on the throne of Atlantis? While he and the water-manipulating Mera were seemingly the object at the end of the first film, Hollywood practice and storytelling dictate that it’s probably not sailing this time around.
Indeed, the previous form suggests that Orm doesn’t make life easy for his half-brother – although Wilson’s aforementioned Instagram post may have muddy water with a slightly secret #brothersdontshakehandsbrothersgottahug. Could family reconciliation be on the card?
David Hyde, aka Black Manta, seems to be the primary promotion to lead the villain in Aquaman 2. Accusing Arthur Curry of his father’s death during a submarine battle in the first film, Black Manta is obsessed with his revenge on Aquaman. He has survived his previous encounter on the skin of his teeth – even armed with high-powered Atlantic weapons – he is unlikely to give up until Arthur Curry is dead.
It is likely that Black Manta will be assisted in his role by Dr. Shin, a character who has made a trip to the screen for DC Comics ’new 52 Aquaman reform. Aquaman’s final order showed that the duo made a deal – if Shin helps Black Manta find Aquaman, Black Manta will give him concrete evidence of the existence of Atlantis.
Unfortunately, Black Manta’s mission of revenge revenge can be bad news for Thomas Curry – if he decides that the ombudsmen are best served by murdering his father’s believing man’s father.
And don’t be surprised if Aquaman 2 also makes a return trip to a well, a dark, scary ocean area where horrible residents held Atlanta captive in Aquaman – especially now that the proposed spin-off of The Trench has dropped Warner Bros. (as reported Variety).
