How to Choose a Mac Mini |
The aptly named Mac Mini is Apple’s pocket-sized desktop computer. Small computers like this have been around for a while, but as an Apple device, the Mac Mini runs on MacOS and not Windows – if you like the idea of a desktop computer but want something with a small footprint, The Mac Mini is the best option if you support Apple software.
Unlike the MacBook or iMac, the Mac Mini is virtually a single model, although it is available in several different hardware configurations. Apple has kept this little desktop computer updated nicely over the years as well, so you also have a few different model years to choose from (which means choosing the last generation unit is often an easy way to save money if you’re not getting the latest hardware).
The Mac Mini saw the latest update last year; before that, it was updated in 2018, so these two model years are the ones you see the most, and the ones we recommend to you in the spring – all parents and hardware may seem like a bit of a long tooth in 2020 for non – basic information technology.
Despite its fragmented case, the Mac Mini offers the same modern computing hardware as the full-size desktop towers, as well as the same MacOS software that you get with iMacs and MacBooks. It also has very good thermal power, which keeps it running surprisingly cool under load (which can be a problem with smaller computers). Note that Apple has added a great new one M1 processor to the 2020 Mac Mini lineup, which we think is worth the upgrade unless you’re on the tightest budgets.
The most attractive feature of the Mac Mini for many buyers is its price. This little PC is by far the cheapest starting point in the world of MacOS computing, and the latest entry-level 2020 models start at around $ 800 retail – Mac Mini products like the above allow you to score even less, and if you’re ready to choose a slightly older hardware, then the 2019 Mac The mini can be bought cheaper.
The catch is, of course, that the Mac Mini doesn’t include a monitor or peripherals (namely, a keyboard, mouse, and speakers), unlike the iMac and MacBook. These add-ons cost extra, but if you already have peripherals you can use – maybe you’re just upgrading your old desktop tower – the Mac Mini offers a lot of value and power in a small footprint. If not, then you might want to consider an iMac insteadbecause it can be a better discovery according to your needs.
