Apple opened pre-orders for the new iPad Pro models on April 30 and the tablets were expected to arrive May 21. Delivery time estimates for the 12.9-inch model began to slip shortly after the start of pre-orders, Bloomberg reports.
11 inches and 12.9 inches iPad Pro were was only recently revealed. They run on a homemade M1 chip and offer optional 5G connectivity, Thunderbolt ports and an upgraded camera system. The 12.9-inch iPad Pro features a mini-LED display labeled by Apple as the Liquid Retina XDR display.
Longer delivery times may be an indication of mini-LED supply problems and strong demand
The manufacture of mini-LED displays has been reported to be more difficult, and this was already expected to result procurement issues initially.
Delivery times for nearly all 12.9-inch iPad Pro models have dropped in the U.S. from June 24 to July 8. The slate is available in two colors, with five storage configurations and Wi-Fi and Cellular options. It looks like non-5G 2TB models will arrive first.
The increase in delivery times may also indicate strong demand for the mini-LED iPad. Per earlier report, Apple has asked its chip supplier to increase production of the M1 processor in anticipation of high demand.
The 11-inch models will continue to be delivered by May. Pricing starts at $ 799 for the smaller model and $ 1099 for the new 12.9-inch slate. On paper, the M1 iPad looks pretty promising, and certainly sounds like one the best tablets around.
During this week, Apple warned in a conference call with investors microprocessor shortage may affect iPad and Mac offerings during the current quarter.
