Epic’s failed GTA V offer brought more than 7 million new users to its online market

In May 2020, Epic Games offered Grand Theft Auto V for free at the Epic Games Store, a store that proved so popular that it toppled the store for more than eight hours. And thanks for the documents that were found as part of Epic v. Apple experiment, we now have an understanding only How the deal was popular: according to an internal Epic slide, it brought more than 7 million new users to Epic’s online marketplace.

You’ll see a slide below that also shows how many new users other free offers brought to the Epic Games Store. While other games like Subnautica and Civilization 6 received a good number of registrations (less than one million and 2.5 million respectively), nothing is close to the 7 million people who joined GTA V.

But even though GTA V Epic Games Store has brought new users to the tidal wave, but it still has a long way to go to reach its primary rival, Steam. Epic was revealed on wednesday that the Epic Games Store has 58 million active users per month, but that’s just under half of Valve’s more than 120 million monthly active players the most recently reported are on Steam.

Like Minutes taken into account, Epic reports 56 million monthly active users in December 2020, which means that the platform has since grown to just 2 million users. Growth rate is slower than the store has seen before – By comparison, monthly active users rose from 32 million in December 2019 to 56 million in December 2020, an average of 2 million more active users per month in a month.

Despite slower growth, Epic still appears to be very committed to its platform. In addition to the news of the platform’s 58 million monthly active users, Epic announced a closed beta for self-publishing in the Epic Games Store. When self-publishing is available to everyone, it may open up barriers for multiple developers to host their games in the Epic store, which can bring in new users.

And other documents Epic v. Apple litigation describe an epic project called “Project Moonshot,” which aims to generate $ 1 billion in gross revenue for the Epic Games Store by investing in “big launches, free games, and key sales”. It seems likely that we will continue to see big pushes from Epic, such as GTA V free offer and Borderlands 3: t the first Epic Games Store exclusive to PC at the time of release (which Epic paid to secure $ 146 million, documents reveal) to attract players to its platform.
