First impressions of the Poco M3 Pro 5G: competitive, but is it distracting?

[ad_1]

Poco M3 Pro 5G is a more powerful version Poco M3 (Review), and offers better features and performance at a slightly higher price. It has a new design, a large battery and a high refresh rate display. This is now Poco’s most affordable 5G smartphone, and it goes against each other Realme 8 5G. I just got my hands on this phone, and while a lot of testing has to be done, here are my first impressions of it.

Poco offers two M3 Pro 5G models in India, in three colors. I have high-end 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage in the Cool Blue upholstery. This is priced at Rs. 15999. Also a more affordable basic option is 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage starting at Rs. 13999. The internal storage can be expanded with a microSD card to the hybrid dual SIM card slot. Other color options include the more subtle Power Black and the distinctive Poco Yellow.

The Poco M3 Pro 5G has a large 90 Hz display with Full HD + resolution

Poco has tried to cover the thickness of the M3 Pro 5G with rounded edges for the frame and back panel. The upper and lower part of the frame is flattened, which adds an interesting aesthetic. There is a headphone jack and IR transmitter at the top and a USB Type-C port and speaker at the bottom. The Poco M3 Pro is not too heavy and has a comfortable hand feel.

The embedded power button on the right also has a fingerprint sensor that works well by either pressing or tapping, depending on how you set it. The 6.5-inch full-HD + LCD panel manages sharp images, decent brightness and vivid colors. I had to manually set the refresh rate to 90 Hz, after which the animations and menu navigation felt much smoother.

The Poco M3 Pro uses the MediaTek Dimensity 700 SoC, just like the Realme 8 5G. On paper, the 7nm SoC looks like a pretty powerful phone in this price range, so gaming and overall multifunction shouldn’t be a problem. We know for sure how it will withstand heavy loads once we have tested it. 5G is of course a big attraction here, but this feature is not much use at the moment as 5G networks are far from the reality in India.

The Poco M3 Pro 5G has all the usual ports, including a headphone jack and an IR transmitter

The Poco M3 Pro 5G runs on MIUI 12.0.2, which is based on Android 11. In the short time I’ve been using this phone, MIUI’s infamous spam apps, like GetApps, have behaved themselves, and I hope this continues throughout the review period. Poco has reduced the battery size to 5,000 mAh compared to the Poco M3’s 6,000 mAh battery. This is still quite a large capacity and should easily produce more than a day’s worth of driving time. The package includes an 18 W quick charger.

Before wrapping this up, we should talk about cameras that look a little disappointing based on the technical data. The primary 48-megapixel camera looks useful enough, but Poco has left out a very wide camera, which is confusing in terms of price. Instead, you get two 2-megapixel sensors for macros and depth, which I don’t think are useful. The front camera has an 8 megapixel sensor. We bring you a complete camera performance report as well as plenty of sample images for the final inspection.

The Poco M3 Pro 5G lacks a very wide camera, which is surprising

Poco M3 Pro 5G does not appear to be a segmental disorder such as Poco X3 Pro (Review), which I find a little disappointing given all the hyps around it. In fact, if you leave 5G for a moment in the equation, phones like Xiaomin Redmi Note 10S and Redmi Note 10 Pro seem to be much better value for about the same price as the high-end Poco M3 Pro. I’ll reserve the final judgment until I’ve tested the phone, so stay tuned with Gadgets 360 so the full review comes soon.
