Apple currently owns smartwatch mode and Apple Watch mode the world’s best-selling watch Is well-deserved. On the other hand, Google has allowed the Wear OS to come to a standstill over the years, and while dedicated companies that use the Wear OS are constantly making great hardware, the software generally feels bad.
Samsung is the only real competitor to Apple Watch. Galaxy Watch 3: t the smooth, well-designed Tizen software and innovative control system make it a winner, but it lacks Google apps and services. Neither Google nor Samsung can beat Apple alone, but maybe together?
It was announced Google I / O 2021. Google’s new Wear software is an exciting combination of Wear OS and Samsung Tizen, complete with Fitbit’s comprehensive health technology. Apple may not be shaking its boots yet, but for the first time, it should look over its shoulder to see what’s coming.
More than just speed and battery life
Google said there are three things to Wear: faster performance, longer battery life, and a thriving developer community. Yes, speed and longer battery life are welcome, but if you’ve ever used both Wear OS and Tizen-based smartwatches, you know that Samsung has far more important improvements to bring to this new software platform if it really wants to compete with Apple Watch.

Samsung’s biggest advantage over the Wear OS is the control system. The Galaxy Watch 3’s rotating bezel is a win-win ergonomic design because it’s so easy to use on your wrist. Some Wear OS watches have rotating crowns, and while it’s a decent alternative to swiping the screen, it’s not always very comfortable to use, and not every company uses it on all watches.
The rotating frame is tied to Tizen’s great, naturally used menu system. Compared to the endless swiping of the screen on the Wear OS, its quirky, eye-catching design feels modern and fun. It’s also really fast, something that Google-based smart watches often struggle with, which is why confusing rarity smart watches with Qualcomm Snapdragon 4100 Wear platform.
Tizen’s control system has always caught more attention because it’s much more user-friendly, much better designed, and much more natural to use than Wear OS. Anything that makes Tizen great is now possibly coming to Wear and a bunch of smart watches made by companies that really understand watch design.
What does Google bring?
However, Tizen suffers from not being part of the Google software, which means it doesn’t have Google Maps, it doesn’t natively use Google Pay, and Samsung needs to actively encourage developers to make apps for it. Samsung’s problem with Tizen is same as Huawei HarmonyOS and Application gallery.
Google, along with Samsung, will improve this. All the familiar and widely used apps are available, you don’t have to sign up for Samsung Pay if you don’t want to, and all the Google Play Store apps that work with Wear OS are likely to work with Wear, too. If not, developers have plenty of motivation to change the situation.
Then there’s Fitbit. Google acquired Fitbit $ 2.1 billion, and this is the first time we’ve heard what it’s designed for the gym. The Apple Watch and Apple Health platform are excellent. It can be used by the casual exerciser in conjunction with the hard, and has thoughtful accessibility features such as wheelchair movement tracking, as well as a comprehensive set of sensors and health-related tools such as environmental noise measurement and automatic handwashing timing.
Fitbit has the knowledge and experience to challenge Apple Health, but has never had the hardware design ability to actually deploy it. Samsung is equally capable of health monitoring, and has innovated where Apple has not done its blood pressure measurement feature on the Galaxy Watch 3. However, neither can come close to the simplicity or friendliness of tracking Apple Watch.
Google Fit is somewhere in between. Fit’s design and usability is one of the few areas of Wear OS that Google has steadily updated and improved, but it’s disappointing because it doesn’t really offer highly motivated sports and fitness fans. Add Fitbit and Samsung to the Google Fit mix, and you have a lot of potential for a much broader health monitoring platform that isn’t tied to ugly hardware.
Industry partnerships can go in both directions. For everyone Leica and Huawei, is also marketing cash McLaren and OnePlus. The good thing is not only that Google and Samsung got a lot of motivation to succeed – both would like to blitz Apple – but the pair has recently been working successfully together on another innovative project, the Galaxy Fold series.

I can’t wait to see what Samsung and Google bring to smartwatches with Wear, because the potential here is huge. But I can’t help but put an effort into it, because if nothing else, the new unified Wear platform underscores the power of the Apple Watch in smartwatch mode: The two biggest technology names in the world seem unique. the way to take it down is to join forces.
