Google provides statutory information to protect the work program of spouses of immigrants

Google has filed an amicus investigation to protect a program that allows spouses of H-1B visa holders to work in the United States. The short release has been signed by numerous technical giants such as Apple, Amazon, Twitter and Microsoft.

The technology industry has long relied on foreign talent to fill labor gaps. In 2020 Google and Amazon were the biggest sponsors of H-1B visasreserved for highly skilled workers.

Under President Trump, the program caught fire. The former president dramatically raised the rejection of H-1B applications, like Seattle Times. He also went after H-4 visas reserved for spouses with H-1B status. Trump threatened to ban H-4 visa holders – a group of 90 percent women – from working in the United States.

Although this ban was never enforced, the ability of H-4 visa holders to work is still threatened by lawsuits brought against the federal government. A suit called Save Jobs USA v. Department of Homeland Security, brought in technical workers who argued that H-4 holders were competing unfairly with Americans looking for work.

The matter was delayed by a ban proposed by President Trump, which could have helped decide the outcome if it had passed. Now that the lawsuit is progressing again, Google and other technology companies want to ensure that immigrant spouses retain their right to work.

In its blog post, Google claims that if the H-4 holders ’employment program is phased out,“ the practical consequence is that we welcome a person to work in the United States, but make it harder for their spouse to work ”. It says it would harm not only immigrant families but also Google’s ability to hire top talent.

“As an immigrant myself, I have been a welcome recipient in America and I hope we can ensure the same reception for future immigrants by maintaining the H-4 EAD program,” wrote Catherine Lacavera, vice president of Google’s legal department. blog post. “Stopping this program would harm families and weaken the U.S. economy at a critical time.”
