Google’s new Samsung smart watch partnership looks like a lot of giving up

That’s theoretically good news for Android owners interested in a decent smartwatch – but which is reprehensible to Google’s hitherto ineffective efforts in smartwatch mode.

In the years when Google first introduced Wear OS (new Android Wear), has never been a really good Android-based smart watch. Samsung Tizen-powered watches have been the best option for years, but they are ultimately Samsung peal. They still work best with Samsung phones, and while they’re good enough with other Android devices, the friction of additional helper apps needs to be installed for them to work. It’s clear why Google wants the battery, app support, and performance benefits Samsung has developed in recent years; but it’s harder to understand why Google hasn’t managed to build anything itself.

Still, despite all its hardware, software, and design expertise, Google hasn’t been entirely successful in getting anything but curiosity into its smartwatch system. But in recent years, there hasn’t been a unified view of what a Wear OS should be; Google has not provided such. Based on the appearance of the recent Samsung partnership, it has decided to drop the issue altogether and instead hand over the business of imagining the future of Android-wearable devices to one of its partners.

Samsung used that offer an Android Wear watchuntil it jumped aboard its own Tizen platform. OnePlus’ recent smart watch also completely bypasses Wear OS. You have to be screwed poorly to get partners to give up deep built-in integration and many apps in the Play Store, but Google has managed to do that with Wear OS.

Maybe Tizen-hybrid Wear will fix it. It’s certainly a win-win for Samsung, the hero that gets to provide an essential backbone for Google’s third-party hardware and take advantage of the massive Android developer community.

And Google gets some big benefits here. The upcoming smartwatch system has one competitor (something that was already relatively few outside of Apple after Google acquired Fitbit.) And there is also potential to gain Samsung’s semiconductor expertise for future smartwatch chips, which would certainly help with the Qualcomm problems the company has had in the past.
