Senua Saga: Hellblade 2 was released in 2019 and is the much-anticipated sequel to developer Ninja Theory for 2017 Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice.
Exclusive Xbox Series X, Xbox series S and PC, the game was unveiled at the Game Awards in 2019, and featured a dark and mysterious trailer that didn’t really deliver much. A couple of years later, and we’re still looking forward to hearing more about the game, including a crucial release date.
It’s now been more than three years since we fought in the depths of Helen with Senua on her way to save the soul of her dead lover from the goddess Hela, so we are more than ready to move on.
With the new Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S in the wild, we hope that 2021 will bring more news about what we can expect with Ninja Theory’s Xbox exclusivity. Currently, Microsoft’s press conference at E3 2021 seems to be the most likely time we get the next update. In the meantime, we’ve put together everything we know so far about Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2.
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 release date
Senuan Saga: Hellblade 2 was unexpectedly announced at Game Awards 2019 with a heart-pumping unveiling trailer. The announcement said Hellblade 2 is coming for Xbox Series X as well as a PC, but it does not reveal the release date.
While it was one of the first Xbox Series X games unveiled, Hellblade 2 wasn’t called a release title, so we weren’t entirely surprised that it wasn’t released with the Xbox Series X in late 2020. Now that we’re in 2021, we hope to hear about some kind of release date soon.
We are tempering our expectations that Hellblade 2 will be the title of 2021, even though the game will not appear in the January 2021 release Xbox Wire reveals games coming exclusively for Xbox in 2021.
Senuan Saga: Hellblade 2 trailers
Senua Saga: Hellblade 2 was officially released for Xbox Series X at Game Awards 2019, featuring a special and granular unveiling trailer. While the trailer didn’t give much story and gameplay, it confirmed that this sequel looks much darker than its predecessor – which was already pretty dark.

On the Xbox E3 2021
E3 2021 is going forward and the Xbox is one of the headlines present. This year’s E3 will be a little different than usual – with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, ESA will take the whole thing online. As such, it will take place on June 12-15, when publishers will stream their press conferences online in addition to a four-day broadcast with comments and interviews.
Now, the Xbox hasn’t yet confirmed the exact details of the press conference, so we don’t know what day it will be held or which games will be on display, but it seems like Hellblade 2 can make a pretty good chance of that kind of look. We haven’t seen much of the game since its release at the Game Awards in 2019, and with Xbox exclusivity, we expect Microsoft to want to shout about it during its performance. Some new material and some sort of release window would be an ideal scenario, but before we get solid details of the show’s plans from the Xbox, this is nothing more than hope and speculation.
Behind the scenes looks
Updates to Hellblade 2 have been pretty thin lately, so behind the scenes of game star Melina Juergens, the update was undoubtedly a welcome addition to fans.
The video diary really focuses on how Juergens prepared this time for the role of Senua, taking a look at a fairly intense combat exercise. This suggests focusing on a realistic, genuine fight in the game itself.
Juergens started a fitness training system and participated in weapons training with the recent Star Wars trilogy and the Game of Thrones swordsman and stunt choreographer CC Smiff. The game’s animators also took combat courses to provide realistic moves to the game’s enemies during the motion capture sessions.
Juergens also revealed that he suffers from a chronic pain condition, fibromyalgia, explaining it “basically means my joints and bones and things like that are always in pain and I have a lot of fatigue. And also when I train, I need quite a bit of time to recover after each workout.”
You can watch the video diary for yourself below and Juergens has said that more will come in the next episode.
Bleeding Edge no longer contains content
Ninja theory has said it will no longer add content to Bleeding Edge as it focuses on the development of Hellblade 2, Project Mara and The Insight Project.
With the studio now focused on our new projects (Senuan Saga, Project Mara & The Insight Project), we have decided that the content of Bleeding Edge will no longer be updated. The game is still playable on Xbox and PC. Thanks to the fans, keep working together and cause chaos!January 28, 2021
Melina Juergens has tweets
Actress Melina Juergens, who plays Senua in the Hellblade series, has posted a tweet referring to Hellblade 2.
Each battle won becomes a bigger battle ⚔️ #senuassaga #hellbladesenuassacrifice Makeup: @puffjockey pic.twitter.com/ORAqwI71VMJanuary 15, 2021
The tweet features a picture of Juergens, painted with Senua rune-type patterns and scars, and is titled with the phrase “For every battle won, a bigger battle comes true” alongside the tags associated with Senua Saga. It’s unclear whether the tweet is an indication that Juergens is set to work on the game, or whether he’s just showing fans some character.
Hellblade 2 does not yet have an official release date or release window, but 2021 seems less likely after a recent release Xbox Wire. Released in January 2021, the release lists games that will come exclusively for the Xbox in 2021.
Since Hellblade 2 is Xbox exclusive and does not appear in this list, it seems unlikely that the game will come soon. However, the list is pretty limited, and we imagine the Xbox still has some unannounced days up its sleeve. We just have to be patient until someone official is notified.
Running on Unreal Engine 5
Microsoft has confirmed that Hellblade 2 will use Unreal Engine 5 as an official Xbox Wire send.
According to Xbox, “the team will build the game for Unreal 5 and harness the power of the Xbox Series X to bring the Hellblade franchise level to an unprecedented level.” They added that the videos featured at The Game Awards in 2019 “have been captured as an engine and reflect the power available to developers on the Xbox Series X to deliver new universes, experiences and games in ways you never imagined.”
Hellblade 2 made an unexpected appearance Introduction to Xbox games July 23, which revealed that the game will be held in Iceland. Developed by Ninja Theory’s A diary series by ‘Dreadnought’ developers, the team talked about how location exploration has been across the country much like for a Hollywood movie, including taking audio recordings to showcase a particularly immersive and accurate landscape. See the video below for more information.
What about the story?
We don’t know anything about the story of Hellblade 2 yet, but the trailer looks much darker than its predecessor. The trailer shows pagan rituals, breathtaking scenery, vaulted limbs and a few battle periods. There are also some clues to the Vikings – which would make sense based on the period. But this is speculation and we will remain largely in the dark.
