The sketch list for the next round of the new emoji was announced today, two days before World Mother’s Day July 17. Competitors include a sleek smiley, a low battery, a disco ball, and several new hand shapes – such as heart hands and forefinger pointing at the viewer – to treat the golden-hearted or mocking your enemies.
The release of the new emoji was delayed this year because of the pandemicand the submission of proposals was suspended until April. The Unicode consortium will not finalize this list until September, but usually most of the candidates in the draft will get through. The final versions should become available for different devices and platforms from the end of 2021 to 2022.
The new emoji shows a continuing expansion of race and gender involvement. The current lineup has customizable skin tones for the handshake mothers, a person with a crown to hang out with the current prince and princess mothers, and a pregnant man and a pregnant person associated with a pregnant woman.
