On the second day Google I / O Developer Conference, much was revealed about the future of Chrome OS. A key part of the plans is for Google to upgrade its Android-running Chromebook to Android 11 throughout the year.
It has been known for some time certain Chromebook models would get Android 11, but Google has now officially confirmed the technical side of the plans – and a new switch to the underlying Android runtime levels within the Chrome operating system.
According to Google, Android will be able to use “compatible devices” to transition from using a container within the Chrome operating system to a new secure virtual machine. When you move away from having Android run time in a tank – a software package that includes everything the software needs to use – there should be several key benefits to protecting your Chromebook. The ChromeOS experience on Android 11 should be more secure and stable, and the performance improvements should also be a bit similar to Linux already running on ChromeOS.
“As developers, you don’t have to worry about making changes. This is just one way we invest in making sure your apps and games are at their best on Chromebooks,” said Sanjay Nathwani, Product Manager, Chrome OS Team.
More importantly, this move means that the scope for Android updates on Chromebooks should be improved. Inside something a separate Google I / O session, A Google engineer said this switch will make the underlying Android environment of the Chrome operating system “more sustainable than before” by reducing its deviation from the Android line.
Most Chromebooks today have Android 9, and these changes may not be noticeable to users or developers. However, with Google notes that the use of Android apps in Chrome has tripled since 2020, there is much hope for improved performance.
Google also unveiled detailed new Android 12-inspired design languages for Chrome, as well as a new a photo feature to the recently introduced Phone Hub feature
