If you use Facebook Messenger on a daily basis, chances are you’ve noticed how images sent through Messenger are often compressed and quality often deteriorates significantly.
So … is it possible to send high resolution photos through Messenger? And how much does Messenger crush and compress your photos?
Facebook Messenger photo compression explained
- Android phones 960p (1 kb), average file size 100 kb
- iPhone 2048p (2K), average file size 400 KB
So … is there a way to send high quality photos through Messenger?
Previously, it was possible to upload HD photos, but it has now been removed from the app, so the answer is no.
However, there is one workaround that allows you to get at least slightly higher photos from your Android phone. This workaround is to install Facebook Lite. Controversial as it may seem, a lighter version of Facebook, designed to store data and work on affordable phones, defaults to sending 2K photos in the same way as you normally would an iPhone.
We’ve tried other suggested solutions: some users recommend that if you open a conversation, then tap the person’s profile and go to the “View Photos and Videos” tab to get higher quality versions of the photos there, but we found that isn’t the case.
Conclusion: It is not possible to send a full size image to Messenger in 2021
So unfortunately, from 2021, it will not be possible to send photos in their original file size via Messenger, and you will need to use another application for it. One such application that is popular in some parts of the world is instant messaging Viber, which has an “original file size” option.
