Huawei accounted for only 4% of smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2021

Huawei became the world’s largest smartphone maker in the second quarter of 2020, but three months later Samsung had changed its leader. Fast forward another six months and Huawei shipments are gone.

The Shenzhen-based brand accounted for only 4% of global smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2021. Counterpoint study. It has fallen from a record high of 20% nine months earlier, and is only the second time in three years that Huawei’s smartphone market share has been registered below 10%. Huawei sold its Honor sub-brand in late 2020. These latest quarterly numbers are the first not included in Honor’s deliveries, so it’s not a completely fair comparison.

Nevertheless, Huawei smartphone deliveries always met most of the demand and a sharp downward trend is clearly visible regardless of Honor’s spinoff consequences. Huawei without Honor was the sixth largest smartphone maker in the first quarter of 2021, although it will soon go even further.

Realme also had a market share of 4% and was close to surpassing the previous number one. But unlike the previous number one, Realme still has access to Google services and has a thriving smartphone business outside of China.

Crucially, Realme also has access to Qualcomm and MediaTek’s 5G chipsets. Huawei did not, which is why the brand recently introduced its next-generation P50 flagship, but did not deliver a strong release date.

Which brands dominate: by region

Today’s report also includes a brief breakdown of smartphone brand performance by region by delivery.

North America

Apple In North America. In the first quarter, its share of transportation was an incredible 55%, although sales declined seasonally. Samsung followed in second place with an impressive 28 percent.

The remaining 17% of the market share was mainly shared between three companies – LG, Motorola and Alcatel. LG accounted for 7% of shipments, although it is now weeks away from a permanent exit from the market.

Motorola followed 5% of the segment and Alcatel owned 1%. It remains to be seen which companies will absorb LG’s sales share in the coming quarters.

In Europe

Samsung was the most successful brand in Europe with a stunning 37% slices. Apple followed in the distant second with 24 percent, and Xiaomi added another 19 percent of the total.

Oppo was fourth with a 4% share in Europe and Realme’s deliveries accounted for 2%.

Latin America

Samsung also dominated this area. It delivered 42% of all smartphones in the first quarter of 2021, nearly doubling second-place Motorola’s market share (22%). Xiaomi followed in third with 8%, LG was fourth with 6%, and ZTE performed in the top 5 with 4%.

Asia

Asia is where things really differ. Vivo was the most popular brand with 18 percent, another BBK brand Oppo followed close to second with 17 percent, and Xiaomi reached a market share of 16%.

Apple’s iPhone and Samsung Galaxy models accounted for 12% of deliveries.

Middle East and Africa

The last area Opposite pointSamsung also topped the list with a 26 percent share. The lesser-known Tecno came in second with 11% and Xiaomi third with 10%. Itel owned 9% of the market and Oppo 6% of deliveries.
