When iPhone SE 2020 launched we heard that it would be followed by a plus-size iPhone SE Plus; years later we are still waiting with this big phone, but that doesn’t mean it won’t come.
We had hoped iPhone 12 the release may also bring us a new iPhone SE, but it didn’t happen – instead we did iPhone 12 mini, which is roughly the size we expect the iPhone SE Plus to be, but with more impressive features.
This should come as no big surprise given how many bigger phones have been acquired since the release of the original iPhone SE. While this updated version has a bigger 5.5-inch screen, today’s cell phone screens are getting closer to 7 inches.
But another reason it shouldn’t be too shocking: the iPhone SE 2020 is basically new hardware tucked into the iPhone 8’s body, so it seems like it’s easy to navigate the same way iPhone 8 Plus to a larger iPhone SE Plus.
We haven’t heard too much about this larger model of the mid-size handset – including why it will be released later than the smaller sibling. But we’ve gathered what we’ve heard below, as well as some of what we want to see.
Rumors suggested a 2021 release for this larger low-end iPhone, which of course didn’t materialize, but maybe 2021 will bring it instead.
Go for it
- What is it? Larger version of iPhone SE (2020)
- When is it outside? Possibly for some time in 2021
- How much does it cost? Over $ 399 / £ 419 / $ 749
IPhone SE Plus price and release date
However, we don’t know when the iPhone SE Plus will come out rumors have suggested that the iPhone SE Plus is at least operational. Unfortunately, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said estimated we may not see the iPhone SE Plus app until the second half of 2021.
Prolific Apple leaker Jon Prosser suggests The iPhone SE Plus could come out in 2021, though they sound pretty vague about that fact, and it was a small bit that was added to the news about the iPhone 13 mini.
Similarly, we haven’t heard any official word on how much the iPhone SE Plus will cost. Because the starting price for the SE 2020 is $ 399 / £ 419 / $ 749, which was lower than the latest official price for the iPhone 8 before it was discontinued, it wouldn’t be too out of line to guess that the SE Plus is cheaper than the iPhone 8 Plus’s last official price of $ 549 (£ 579, $ 949).
iPhone SE Plus rumors and leaks
While there aren’t many rumors about iPhone SE Plus, there are things we can understand about the release of a smaller sibling. The iPhone SE 2020 inherited its hardware (excluding chipsets and RAM) from the iPhone 8, including a 4.7-inch LCD screen with SD (1334×750) resolution.
With this concept, the iPhone SE Plus probably has the same specifications as the iPhone 8 Plus – the 5.5-inch FHD (1920x1080p) screen, which is still an LCD screen, is sharper than its smaller sibling. Likewise, it will likely inherit the iPhone 8 Plus’s dual rear cameras: a 12-megapixel wide and 12-megapixel telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom. It can control 4K video at 60 frames per second or 1080p HD at 30 frames per second with a 7 megapixel front camera.
iPhone SE Plus: what we want to see
1. Multiple rear cameras
The big difference between the iPhone 8 and the 8 Plus was the extra rear camera behind the latter, which produced stereoscopic images that could be combined to create a depth effect – thus enabling the first photos in portrait mode. While the iPhone SE 2020 can pull depth with software algorithms, doing it digitally produces more visual errors than using two (or more) lenses to achieve it.
2. Better lenses and sensors
And hey, don’t stop at the iPhone 8’s two rear cameras – why not give us better lenses and sensors iPhone 11 line to shoot better night shots? While the iPhone SE 2020 features the leading A13 Bionic chipset, its older camera technology prevents it from managing the same stunning Night Mode photos taken from the new flagships.
3. Less frame
Yes, yes, Apple seems to have kept the cost of the iPhone SE 2020 low by recycling the hardware, screen and case of the iPhone 8, but this has led to the same thick chin, top and frame being kept with older models – which are extensive by today’s standards . Since most phones released today have very high screen-to-body ratios by stretching the screen almost completely to the front of the phone, it’s pretty rough to see that the iPhone SE 2020 won’t be able to live up to the times.
4. Larger battery
The iPhone 8 Plus’s 2691 mAh battery was certainly larger than the iPhone 8’s 1821 mAh capacity, but we still don’t expect more than a three-year model in the new iPhone SE 2020 Plus app. Given how many compromises the iPhone SE 2020 line has made to reduce costs (i.e., inheriting virtually the same iPhone 8 model), we would like to see practical benefits – such as more battery life. However, we are satisfied with the faster 18 W charger in the package.
5. 3.5 mm connector
Okay, this is a barrel dream, but we’d like to get the 3.5mm connector back. One of the hardest things to lose on the iPhone 6S was the headphone port, especially when the iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 kept the same physical dimensions, so it would be a great gesture to get this feature – found in many other phones in the range.
