Maggie Q, the star of The Protégé, says she’s open to a sequel. The Protégé tells the story of Q’s Anna, who was rescued as a child and raised to be an assassin by Moody, played by Samuel L. Jackson. When Moody is killed, Anna sets out on a quest for revenge. The film also stars Michael Keaton and Robert Patrick, from a script by Richard Wenk, who previously penned both of Denzel Washington’s Equalizer films. The Protégé is directed by Martin Campbell, who is best known for helming two James Bond entries, GoldenEye and Casino Royale.
While speaking on Collider Ladies Night (via Collider), Q was asked about a Protégé sequel, to which she responded, “I would love more.” She mentions wanting to work with Campbell and the cast again while talking about how much fun the movie is for viewers. However, Q adds a caveat to her statement, as a sequel is wholly dependant on whether or not audiences respond to the film. Check out Q’s comments below:
“I would love more. I don’t think I’ve ever really said that. First of all, this cast, but also, I really want to work with Martin again and I think it would be really fun to team up again on something like this. We did leave it open and so we shall see. And it’s not obnoxious. It’s fun! It’s like, listen, if audiences respond to it, we’ll probably get to. If they don’t then, you know, it’s a different story, but we’ll see.”

The prospect of a sequel will likely come down to the film’s final box office numbers. The Protégé opened on Friday, and it pulled in $2.9 million over the weekend. While the box office isn’t in the state it once was due to the COVID pandemic, that opening weekend take may not inspire confidence in a sequel. On the critical side, the film currently holds a barely fresh rating of 61% on Rotten Tomatoes, with most reviews stating the Q is fantastic in The Protégé, but she deserves better than a run-of-the-mill action film. The film’s real impact may not be felt until it hits streaming services, where it could find a much larger audience. If that ends up being the case, then a sequel could very well manifest in the future. For those looking to see Q in action, The Protégé is in theaters now.
