Mahindra and Mahindra have confirmed that the domestic carmaker will start testing passenger EV mode from the next calendar year. Maheshra and Mahindra CEO Rajesh Jejurikar said the company’s two new electric cars, the Mahindra eXUV300 and eKUV100 (unveiled at the 2020 Auto Expo), will hit the market in 2022. Mahindra has adopted a two-pronged strategy to bring its presence into EV space. The company plans to invest Rs 3,000 million in its EV business by 2025, as well as the company believes the company’s personal EV segment has matured significantly in terms of cost and infrastructure.
Of this, the company has already invested SEK 1,700 and spent another SEK 500 to set up a new research and development center. At the same time, a subsidiary of Mahindra Electric has also been merged into the larger Mahindra Automotive Group.
Currently, the company is focusing on mobility solutions for the last mile, a segment that the company believes is ready for electrification. Mahindra has a full range of electric tricycles, and the Mahindra Atom, a passenger-powered quad bike that will be on display in near-production mode at the 2020 Auto Expo, will also be launched sometime this year.
For personal EV mode, the company is developing Mahindra Electric Scalable Modular Architecture (MESMA 350). This is the high-voltage, long-range chassis that is the foundation of the eXUV300. The Mahindra XUV300 Electric is expected to use a 40 kWh battery that produces 132 hp and a range of about 300 km on a single charge and competes with the Tata Nexon EV. The EKUV100 is aimed at the most price-conscious segment and should be about 150 km long. The EXUV300 rises against the Nexon EV and should charge a corresponding 2-3 cap fee for a regular car. Mahindra has confirmed its focus on the EV SUV market, which is in line with its position in the IC engine market.
