One of the many films that landed a global pandemic was Paul Schrader’s latest offering Card counter, whose production came to a standstill for months as the industry adapted to new practices. Now that Hollywood has begun to come to life, Focus Features has set an fall date for the Revenge thriller and it will finally hit movie theaters on September 10, 2021.
Starring Oscar Isaac, Tiffany Haddish, Tye Sheridan and Willem Dafoe, Card counter is the director of Martin Scorsese and Schrader’s first film after his Oscar-nominated drama The first reformed.
Card counter followed by William Tell (Isaac), a gambler and former conscript who plans to reform a young man seeking revenge on a common enemy from his past. Tell just wants to play cards. His Spartan existence on the casino path breaks down as Cirk, a vulnerable and angry young man, seeks help to carry out his plan of revenge for an army colonel. Tell sees an opportunity for redemption in his relationship with the Circus. After getting a mysterious gambling financier in La Linda, Tell takes Cirk with him on the road, going from casino to casino until an unlikely trio seeks to win the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. But keeping the Circus straight and narrow proves impossible, pulling Tell back into the darkness of the past.
