Display daily says Rose Byrne is set to portray New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern in They are us, a drama film directed by Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, Good to kill), which takes place after the 2019 mosques in Christchurch.
“They are us it’s not so much about the attack but in response to the attack, ”Niccol said. “How an unprecedented act of hatred was overcome with a leak of love and support. The film is about our common humanity, which is why I think it speaks to people around the world. It’s an example of how we should react when attacking other people.”
However, the film’s revelation has met with a growing backlash in New Zealand, where it has been accused of “white salvation” focusing on Ardern rather than the victims of the tragedy, and many in the Muslim community have questioned the film’s timing and appropriateness. At the same time, Ardern has also talked about distance by strengthening the project AsiatNZ that “he or the government had no connection with the production.”
Byrne will be seen next in Apple TV +’s comedy drama series Physical, which premiered on June 18. Watch the trailer here.
