Sony has sold a total of 7.8 million PlayStation 5 consoles since its release in November last year the annual earnings report for 2020 was disclosed. PlayStation Plus now has about 47.6 million subscribers, an increase of 14.7 percent. PlayStation’s total business has achieved an operating profit of 342.2 billion yen ($ 3.14 billion) for fiscal 2020 – a Sony record, as last quarter’s figures show.
In a financial report for the third quarter of 2019, Sony announced the sale of 4.5 million PlayStation 5 units after its release in early November. In addition, Sony sold 1.4 million PlayStation 4 consoles out of 5.7 million in the third quarter of 2020 and one million units in the fourth quarter of 2020. The increase in Sony production before the release of the system explains the drop in the quarter.
The company also sold 338.9 million full-game software for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 and 58.4 million first-party titles in 2020, compared to 61.4 million and 7.9 million in the fourth quarter of 2020, respectively.
In addition, Sony’s Gaming and Online Services segment, which includes games, consoles and online services, generated JPY (Japanese Yen) revenue of 2,604,713 million (roughly SEK 1.8). The PS5 was the fastest-selling console in U.S. history in terms of the total amount of money spent and units transferred during its first five months of availability, according to NPD.
Sony recently announced on a PlayStation Twitter account to announce that users of PlayStation Now (Sony’s cloud streaming subscription service) will soon be able to stream selective games at 1080p resolution.
PlayStation Now is starting support for 1080p-compatible games this week.
