Sony has confirmed that the Sony Xperia 10 III will be up and running in the coming months. Sony’s mid-range phone is sure to compete best cheap phones, thanks in part to its 5G connection.
OTHER PHONES ON:
While other 2021 Sony phones – Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III – are powerful devices designed to receive the flagships of other companies, the Xperia 10 III is aimed at more frugal customers.
With the updated Snapdragon chipset, battery and cameras, the Xperia 10 III will hopefully do better than Xperia 10 II, which generally had slow performance and camera speeds in our tests last year.
Here’s everything you need to know about the Sony Budget Phone 2021, including when to buy it, Xperia 10 III computers, and how much it will cost.
Go for it
- What is it? Sony’s affordable 5G smartphone
- When is it outside? Early summer 2021
- How much does it cost? £ 399 (about $ 565, $ 725)
Sony Xperia 10 III release date and price
Sony says the release date for the Xperia 10 III is early summer 2021, but does not specify a date. Summer starts on June 20th, so we expect the launch date to be set for late June or early July. Nothing later can be considered ‘early’.
As for the price of the Xperia 10 III, it was announced without fanfills at some point after the release – in the UK it costs £ 399, which translates to around $ 565 or 725 AU, although the exact price is likely to vary in other areas.
Last year’s 10 II model cost £ 319 / $ 399 (about $ 520), so it’s reasonable to guess this year’s phone will fall somewhere in that area. Adding a 5G chip and a larger battery might raise the price, but probably up to £ 369 / $ 500 / $ 650.
Design and presentation
Most of the differences between the Sony Xperia 10 III and Xperia 10 II seem to be internal, based on Sony’s official renders and the specifications of the new phone.
You’ll find the same 6-inch FHD OLED display with Sony’s trademark 21: 9 widescreen aspect ratio on the Xperia 10 III as its predecessor. It also restores its notched design: the selfie camera is stuck above the screen, so nothing obstructs your view.
The 21: 9 aspect ratio will hit some phone users; it allows you to stack two apps on top of each other or get more landscape real estate for movies and games, but a mid-range Snapdragon may have more difficulty using multiple apps or requiring apps to run smoothly.
Since Sony didn’t mention it, it can be assumed that the 10 III is made of plastic and not metal – which Xperia fans have. It is available in black, blue and white.
More returning features from last year’s phone: Gorilla Glass 6 front and back, IP65 / IP68 water and dust resistance, 3.5mm audio connector and compact design built for one-handed browsing. The Xperia 10 III weighs 169 g (6 oz) and is 68 mm (2.7 inches) wide compared to the Xperia 10 II’s 151 g (5.3 oz) and 69 mm.
Cameras and battery life
One of the biggest improvements to the Sony Xperia 10 III is its updated battery life. It uses a 4500 mAh battery compared to 3600 mAh with the 10 II.
In our battery tests, the 2020 model can last 2 days with light use, but struggled with some harsh media use. Because the Xperia 10 III is seemingly designed for watching movies, this update is a necessary and welcome addition.
Sony says the Xperia 10 III has a ‘new triple lens camera’, but it’s a bit exaggerated. The Xperia 10 III has an ultra-wide 16mm, 27mm wide and 54mm telephoto cameras, but all of these focal lengths are within a few millimeters of 10 II cameras. It’s possible that the new main camera has a wider FOV and a smaller aperture, but nothing is dramatically different.
In fact, a recent Sony spec leak announced that the Xperia 10 III has a 12-megapixel main camera, an 8-megapixel telephoto lens and a very wide 8-megapixel camera – compatible with Xperia 10 II cameras.
The cameras have some cool new software updates, such as an ‘animal detection’ tool that detects dogs or cats in the frame and adjusts settings to reduce blur when you try to catch them on the go. But we didn’t buy this phone for photographers.
Performance and software
Another significant addition to this phone is the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 5G chipset. Most new 5G phones tend to be more expensive, so the Xperia 10 III could compete with other low-cost 5G phones, such as Motorola One 5G and Oppo Find X2 Lite.
Sony has not yet announced the RAM and storage status of the upcoming phone. However, the recent Geébench 5 list announced that the upcoming Sony phone, which is suitable for shooting the Xperia 10 III, would have 6GB of RAM.
The Xperia 10 II had Snapdragon 660 and 4GB of RAM, suggesting that its successor could get decent performance. Sony has also confirmed that the Xperia 10 III will work Android 11.
