The old Vidme embedding will turn into a porn center after purchasing the domain

Here’s (one more) argument for using third-party embedding on your prestigious website: Porn Company 5 Star HD Porn bought an outdated domain for video hosting site Vidme, which in 2017. This means that all Vidme-embedded websites now have porn. By Motherboard, which first told the story, includes a list of websites with unexpected porn embedding New York Magazine, Washington Post, HuffPost, and others. And yes, we found one such embedded Limit and have since disabled it.

Old Vidme is now re-embedding on the porn site

It’s a very extreme example of link degradation, which happens when web content or images are deleted or otherwise broken, so links don’t point back to their original destinations. We saw another extensive example of this after the former President Trump was banned from Twitter in January after inciting a riot in the Capitol. Thousands of Tweets sent by the former president over the years Twitter was wiped out, and the embedding of tweets now appear as empty gray boxes. Some of the former President’s Tweets have to be preserved under the Presidential Records Act (which preceded Twitter for more than four decades), and there is sortable archive of most of his tweets built by an independent developer, so his Tweets have not completely disappeared from the Internet.

Most social media platforms have made it possible to embed content; Twitter activated embedding in 2012, and Facebook, Snapchat, YouTube, and Instagram all also allow some embedding. Reddit has option its embedded content that allows users to clear them if the post is edited.

Used properly, embedded content can help illustrate a blog post or news online and provide credibility. But when the links go wrong, as the Vidme case apparently is, it can be a serious headache to deal with thousands of dips that don’t go where they should be.
