Some important details have emerged Valven Steam Deck portable console-like PC – especially its target performance and whether you can install your own NVMe SSD to upgrade your storage space.
Inside something video interview IGN, Valve announced that the Steam Deck’s 800p display, capable of up to 60Hz refresh rate, targets 30Hz gameplay. In other words, Nintendo Switch comparisons may go a little deeper than the surface, as many games on that platform run well below 60 frames per second. While most PC games offer a set of graphic settings for fine-tuning, Steam Deck should be able to achieve smoother gameplay at the expense of graphic quality if you’re willing to drop a few settings depending on the game, of course.
Valve also shared that primarily M.2 2230 standard SSDs used on the Steam Deck are not soldered board. In the world of gaming laptops, this usually means trying to make sure that M.2 SSDs are easy to switch to, for example, a larger one that you already have on hand, or one that may not cost as much as Valve charges for stock upgrades. Article IGN confirms that you can technically remove and update the storage space on your Steam Deck yourself, but the focus is on fixability, not adding a daily user adjustment factor. So these SSD slots may not be as accessible as we hope, like the PS5 slot, which is covered with an easily removable plastic cover, but we don’t know for sure because Valve hasn’t shown the Steam Deck.

Valve hardware engineer Yazan Aldehayyat said IGN that “repairability is something we actually focus on and try to make it as repairable as possible. But it’s really meant for people who know what they’re doing and have experience doing it.” If Valve doesn’t exaggerate the problem, some people may be better off choosing a larger microSD card to store more games – a much simpler function.
Steam Deck Specifications mention that the M.2 SSD is not “intended to replace the end user”. It doesn’t stop some people – however, the warranty may expire. IGN does not directly confirm whether or not SSDs will void the warranty when attempting to do so, although the publication indicates it is likely to be. Limit has contacted Valve, and we will update this message if we receive confirmation of how updating the storage space may affect the warranty status.
Steam Deck is now bookable, and those who had booked it first will receive their first orders in December 2021. Making a reservation requires a $ 5 investment that goes toward the final purchase. Even if you haven’t already, the expected order for the console is currently set for the second quarter of 2022.
