Free TikTok has arrived on some American Airlines flights a press release issued by the company (through CNET). Passengers can use the app for up to 30 minutes for free, giving them time to watch at least ten new, longer TikToks. If you don’t already have the app installed, the airline says you can download it for free while you’re on the air.
The move may make TikTok available to passengers as airlines try to get attention back to flying number of passengers by air dropped during the pandemic. One of its competitors, United, has also added technical upgrades to its fleet, allows passengers to order snacks during the flight and add planes to it support Bluetooth audio on the seat screens. The American has recently allowed passengers to use Facebook Messenger during a free flight and give them at least some contact with the outside world — some of its competitors done for years for it and other messaging applications.
According to the airline’s press release, the campaign is an “experiment.” CNET reports that the customer’s response determines how long the experiment lasts.
If you’re planning flights around the free TikTok, you might want to keep in mind that not every flight seems to have access to it. American Airlines states that the offer only applies to narrow-body aircraft with a Viasat Wi-Fi system. Lots of planes airline fleet seem to have a narrow fuselage, but machines like the Boeing 787 area. American uses too a few Wi-Fi providers for their flights, so even if the flight has Wi-Fi, it is possible that it will not come from Viasat.
airline press release tells its passengers that they can expect to find a lot of content on the platform, including “travel inspiration” and “career advice”. While it’s hard to imagine a lot of people sitting on a plane and watching TikTox on how to make a resume, searching for half an hour of short videos wherever you are isn’t the worst idea. Let’s just hope your time isn’t used strange fake ads with Flo Rida songs.
