Xiaomi has unveiled the Mix 4, the first phone in the Mi Mix series to be unveiled in nearly three years. Mix phones have always been frameless models with seamless screens, and Mix 4 continues this idea by commercializing a technology Xiaomi has been working on for a long time: a selfie camera located directly below the screen.
Xiaomi calls this CUP (Camera Under Panel) technology, although it is similar to the selfie cameras seen by other companies. Like Oppo and ZTEWith his latest effort, the Mix 4’s display has a 400ppi range that lets light into a selfie camera that Xiaomi describes as virtually invisible. The camera is 20 megapixels and the screen is a 6.67-inch 120 Hz 1080p curved OLED panel.
Xiaomi says the CUP is “a technology that has been replicated in three great generations, five years, sixty patents, through a $ 77 million investment and hundreds of engineers”. Last year the company promised will start mass production on smartphones using camera technology below the third generation display in 2021, so it fulfills that promise with Mix 4. Xiaomi first assigned it took the idea back in 2019.
The Mix 4 is the first phone to be unveiled Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 888 Plus processor, the flagship 888 chip speed version with a top speed of 3GHz. (Honor said he’s already using the Magic 3’s 888 Plus, but the phone hasn’t yet been fully unveiled.) The processor is bundled with 8GB or 12GB of RAM and 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB of storage.
The camera system is centered around a 108-megapixel Samsung HMX sensor, suggesting the same or similar performance as the slightly outdated but still good Mi 11. There’s also a 13-megapixel ultra-wide and 8-megapixel 5x periscope telephoto image.
The Mix 4 has a 4,500 mAh battery that can charge up to 120W wired and 50W wireless. This isn’t Xiaomi’s first phone with a 120W quick charge, but it may be the fastest — Xiaomi claims the battery will fully charge in less than 15 minutes, compared to 23 minutes last year’s Mi 10 Ultra. The 50 W wireless charge takes 28 minutes to get 100%.
So far, Xiaomi only confirms the launch of Mainland China for Mix 4. Pre-orders start there tomorrow.
